CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 offers outstanding resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures can cause embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. Also available in cold-worked condition with yield strength exceeding 160 ksi, it maintains excellent toughness even at temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is suitable for cold forming but has a high work-hardening rate, requiring intermediate anneals. Post hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is an exceptional duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel containing 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. It stands as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, boasting yield strength that is twice that of typical austenitic grades. This steel also delivers outstanding fatigue strength and resists stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the harshest conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, the edge may cool much faster than the bulk, risking cracks in the cooler areas.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even with powerful equipment, the significant springback due to this grade's high strength must be carefully considered.
Duplex 2205 presents a slightly greater challenge in machining compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Here are key machining guidelines: A) Utilize a robust and rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Avoid longer than necessary tool nose radii to maintain a sharp edge while ensuring adequate strength; D) Sequence machining operations so that each cut remains below the previously work-hardened layer.
