Certifications

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless Steel Rod

• This grade offers superior resistance compared to 304 in various atmospheric environments and numerous corrosive media, thanks to its enhanced chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• However, it is vulnerable to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride settings and stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 122°F (50°C).
• It is considered resistant to potable water containing up to approximately 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, which reduces to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Often referred to as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' but it is not resistant to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits robust oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L provides superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Boasts exceptional weldability using all standard fusion techniques, both with and without filler metals.
• For maximum corrosion resistance, heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing, which is unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The recommended annealing temperature range is between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot achieve hardening through heat treatment.
• Special measures are required to manage the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers suggest a maximum forging temperature range of 2100°F to 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) to maintain quality.
• Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final annealing process.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L Stainless Steel Rods are extremely tough and ductile, making them suitable for cold working methods such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., with ease.
• Severely cold-formed components should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINING:

• Type 316/316L Stainless Steel Rod is slightly more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• These grades produce tough and strong chip characteristics.
• Utilize chip breakers and curlers.
• Employ the largest tool possible and ample cutting fluid for optimal results.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds to counteract rapid work hardening of 316/316L.
