Stringent SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
Advanced HEAT TREATMENT Options
- For achieving high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, annealing can be conducted at temperatures of 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment methods tailored to your needs. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 - 1,400°F (691 - 760°C), for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C), for 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 - 1,750°F (913 - 954°C), for 1 hour, with a water quench.
- 4. Aging: 975 - 1,025°F (524 - 552°C), for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.
In the solution-treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections yields optimal properties. Larger sections and/or delayed quenching may result in less than optimal properties.
Precision HARDNESS
Typical hardness in the annealed condition ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution-treated and aged condition, it elevates to Rockwell C 35-39.
Exceptional Forgeability and Formability
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar undergoes forging at an impressive 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). To achieve optimal properties, a minimum reduction of 35% is strongly recommended.
- Forming the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar at room temperature presents significant challenges, even in its annealed state. Thus, rigorous forming operations such as bending or stretching should be executed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) to maintain its mechanical properties. Achieve hot sizing or forming through creep forming within the 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C) range.
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is machinable using techniques akin to austenitic stainless steel. Employ slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tools, and generous application of non-chlorinated cutting fluids for best results.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod boasts excellent weldability in both annealed and solution-aged conditions, with aging achieved during post-weld heat treatment. Safeguard against contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Perform fusion welding in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas shields. Spot, seam, and flash welding are feasible without protective atmospheric conditions.
Special Considerations
Contamination risks for the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod include hydrogen from improper pickling and oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can compromise ductility and negatively impact notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod: Industry-leading quality and performance.
Corrosion Resistance: Unmatched durability in challenging environments.
Titanium Usage Advisory: Avoid strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion: Comprehensive protection across various media presented in Table 1.
Grade 2 Titanium Corrosion Rates: Demonstrates significant resistance to a wide variety of environments including:
- Seawater and Brines: Exceptional durability in marine conditions.
- Inorganic Salts: Resilient against a spectrum of salts.
- Moist *** Gas: Robust performance in ***-rich environments.
- Alkaline Solutions: Reliable resistance in basic environments.
- Oxidizing Acids: Enduring protection against aggressive acids.
- Organics and Organic Acids: Superior compatibility with organic compounds.
- Sulfur Compounds: Strong resistance to sulfur-induced corrosion.
Crevice Corrosion: Outstanding resistance in salt solutions compared to stainless steels.
Crevice Corrosion Resistance: No crevice corrosion in temperatures below 80°C (176°F), even under super chlorinated conditions, demonstrating superior performance.
Stress Corrosion Cracking: Minimizing the risk of stress corrosion in demanding applications.
Grade 2 titanium exhibits outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and remains impervious to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium offers exceptional resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
In seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), titanium shows negligible erosion. Even with abrasive particles like sand, the material's corrosion is only minimally affected.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium does not significantly absorb hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Typically, hydrogen absorption only happens when these three conditions are met:
- The pH is less than 3 or greater than 12.
- The temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C).
- There is a mechanism for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit remarkable immunity to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. While they may biofoul in seawater due to their non-toxicity to marine life, this can be mitigated by chlorination or increasing the water velocity through heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many other materials, titanium's fatigue performance does not degrade in seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned near the noble end, close to stainless steels. It typically acts as the cathode when coupled with other metals, preventing its own corrosion but potentially accelerating the corrosion of the other metal. When coupled with more noble metals like graphite, titanium's passivity is enhanced.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod maintains its fatigue properties even in the presence of seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are the same whether tested in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable, provided that necessary precautions are taken. Due to titanium's reactivity, both the OD and ID of the rod must be shielded with inert gas. The material must be free of any grease or oil contamination.
Grade 2 Titanium Rod is usually welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input should be used to minimize the heat-affected zone size. Post-weld heat treatment is not typically required.
