Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general-purpose stainless steel tube containing 11% chromium. It is especially tailored for applications demanding oxidation or corrosion resistance beyond the capabilities of carbon steel and some coated steels. The 409 tube stands out for its robust oxidation resistance and formability, although it exhibits lower corrosion resistance due to its reduced chromium content. While 409 offers less corrosion resistance compared to grades such as 304, 430, or 439, it surpasses mild steel in performance. The 409 tube is versatile in forming, accommodating roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming. Post-annealing, 409 does not harden during cold treatment processes like press or stretch bending. Fairly weldable, this stainless steel is unsuitable for shock-loaded structures due to grain structure growth in the heat-affected zone, impacting mechanical quality directly. Predominantly utilized in automotive exhaust system applications, the 409 tube delivers significant mechanical benefits in both the automotive and agricultural sectors. It excels in resisting corrosion from exhaust gases and high-temperature environments, but mechanical properties take precedence over aesthetic qualities. Thus, it is not recommended for decorative purposes.

GENERAL PROPERTIES:
- Alloy 409 is a ferritic stainless steel that has been stabilised with chromium and titanium. Its principal application is automobile exhaust systems. It includes 11% chromium, which is the minimal amount required for the creation of the passive surface coating that provides stainless steels with corrosion resistance. It has strong corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures, medium strength, decent formability, and an affordable total price. Alloy 409 resists corrosion more strongly than carbon steel and is used as an alternative to carbon steel in slightly demanding conditions where its high resistance to corrosion and high temperature oxidation provide an advantage. CORROSION RESISTANCE:

- Generally classified as resistant to scaling in intermittent service up to 1499oF (815oC ) and up to 1247oF (675oC) in continuous service
WELDABILITY
- Readily weldable
- Pre-heat of 302 to 500oF (150 to 260oC) is recommended
- Post-weld annealing at 1400 to 1499oF improved weld ductility
- Post-weld annealing is not required when welding thin sections
- Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded without filler metal
