GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight-chromium, non-hardenable grade that combines excellent corrosion resistance and formability with useful mechanical properties. Due to its superior resistance, it is frequently used in various chemical applications. However, its most common uses are in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of Grade 430, available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434 is the molybdenum-bearing counterpart of Grade 430, sharing its advantageous characteristics. The addition of molybdenum enhances corrosion resistance.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the properties of Grade 430 for flat-rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Other products like forgings and bars have similar, though not identical, qualities as per their respective specifications. The properties of Grade 430F bars are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 boasts robust resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including select organic acids. The highest levels of corrosion resistance are achieved with a highly polished or ground finish. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to that of Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, Grade 430 demonstrates excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The free-machining Grade 430F exhibits lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high-sulfur, free-machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range can lead to brittleness at room temperature, which can be counteracted by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, slow furnace cool to 600°C, then quickly air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- For optimal welding results, pre-heat the material at 150-200°C.
- Mitigate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone with a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C.
- Note: Grain refinement will not occur.
MACHINING:
- Our material is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- However, there's still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Lightly drawn bars are simpler to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- For even easier machining, opt for Grade 430F, the free machining version of 430.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate of our material makes bending and forming easier than grade 304 steel.
- However, please note that lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- When making severe bends, ensure that the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
