904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel stands as a premium high-alloy austenitic product designed to conquer severe corrosion challenges, offering robust corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel distinguishes itself as a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a low carbon content. Enhanced with copper, it excels against strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. This steel resists stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion while being non-magnetic, highly formable, tough, and weldable. The 904L grade boasts significant amounts of costly elements such as molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel demonstrates exceptional resistance to hot seawater and chloride attacks. Its high nickel content ensures superior stress corrosion cracking resistance. Copper addition enhances resistance to sulfuric acid and various reducing agents in both aggressive and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L stands between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. While 904L surpasses grades 304L and 310L without Mo, achieving optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in sensitive settings requires post-cold working solution treatment.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes offer exceptional resistance to both warm seawater and chloride attack. The high nickel content in grade 904L provides robust protection against stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, the copper elements enhance resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, making it ideal for both aggressive and mild environments.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L sits between the super austenitic grades, which contain 6% molybdenum, and the standard 316L austenitic grades. Compared to grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, grade 904L exhibits intermediate resistance. To optimize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical conditions, this steel grade should undergo solution treatment following cold working.
Grade 904L stainless steel provides good oxidation resistance; however, its structural stability diminishes at high temperatures, especially above 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be solution heat-treated at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is ideal for hardening these grades.
You can weld grade 904L stainless steels using all conventional methods without the need for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. Note that grade 904L is prone to hot cracking in constrained weldments, and therefore, grade 904L electrodes and rods should be used according to AS 1554.6 guidelines.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with low sulfur content, making them easy to machine using standard methods. They can be bent to a small radius under cold conditions. While subsequent annealing is generally unnecessary, it should be conducted if fabrication involves severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
