Furthermore, 904L stainless steel shows exceptional resistance to both crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, outperforming many other steel varieties. - 904L stainless steel excels in heat resistance, enduring temperatures up to a formidable 400 degrees Celsius. It is amenable to heat treatment within a range of 1090 to 1175 degrees Celsius, followed by rapid cooling. Such heat treatment processes are optimal for hardening 904L steel, ensuring its durability and strength.

What is 904L used for?

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L is highly amenable to welding and can be processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.
Cold Forming
- 904L stainless steel is exceptionally ductile and can be easily formed. However, the addition of molybdenum and nitrogen may necessitate the use of more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L require temperatures ranging from 1562 to 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working should be followed by a solution anneal and quenching. However, for 904L, if hot forming ceases at temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is quenched immediately, further heat treatment may not be necessary. It is crucial to ensure the entire workpiece is quenched from temperatures exceeding 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling occurs below 2012°F (1100°C), or if cooling is too slow, hot working must always be followed by solution annealing and quenching. The recommended solution annealing temperature for 904L is between 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- Alloy 904L's cold work hardening rate makes it less machinable compared to 410 and 304 stainless steels.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most traditional welding methods. Its austenitic plate materials feature a uniform structure with an even distribution of alloying elements. Elements such as molybdenum, chromium, and nickel may redistribute during the solidification process post-welding, leading to segregations that can sometimes reduce corrosion resistance. However, this effect is less significant in 904L, which can be welded using filler metal that matches the base metal's composition, or even without any filler metal.
- For 904L welding, the recommended consumables include 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wire.
