Type 201 stainless steel is a meticulously engineered austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy, designed to maximize nickel conservation. As a cost-effective alternative to 301 and 304 Cr-Ni stainless steels, it replaces nickel with manganese and nitrogen. While it cannot be hardened through heat treatment, it achieves remarkable tensile strength via cold working. In its annealed state, 201 is non-magnetic but gains magnetic properties after cold working.
