Enhanced with additional chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, it offers remarkable resistance to corrosion and chemicals such as sulfite, acetic, formic, citric, and tartaric acids. Its low carbon content prevents sensitization during welding while increasing its creep, rupture stress, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures. This alloy remains nonmagnetic in its annealed condition, with a slight magnetism potentially arising post-welding.

Corrosion Resistance
- Exhibits superior corrosion resistance in challenging environments, including various chemicals, particularly in acidic chloride settings.
- Provides excellent resistance when minimal contamination is required.

Heat Resistance

Welding Characteristics
- Compatible with all common fusion and resistance methods, except oxyacetylene welding.
- Use AWS E317L/ER317L filler metal or austenitic, low-carbon filler metals with higher molybdenum content than Type 317L, or a nickel-base filler metal with adequate chromium and molybdenum to exceed Type 317L's corrosion resistance.
Machinability
- Low speeds and constant feeds minimize work hardening in this alloy.
- Tougher than 304 stainless, the use of chip breakers is recommended due to its long stringy chip.
