This super austenitic stainless steel (UNS N08904) is versatile, thriving in various processing environments with moderate to high corrosion resistance. Its substantial chromium and nickel content, boosted by molybdenum and copper, ensures superior corrosion resistance. With a robust alloy composition of 25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum, 904L surpasses 316L and 317L stainless steels in chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and general corrosion resistance. Originally engineered for dilute sulfuric acid conditions, 904L also resists most organic and inorganic acids, including hot phosphoric acid. It is easily weldable and accommodates standard shop fabrication techniques.

What are 904L's best qualities?
- This exceptional grade of stainless steel is characterized by its low carbon content and high copper concentration, remarkably boosting resistance to strong acids such as sulfuric acid. Additionally, its high nickel content ensures exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. 904L stainless steel is also highly resistant to crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, which can compromise other steel types. It is highly versatile and can be deployed in various demanding environments, including warm waters and areas exposed to chlorides. Ideal for both moderate and extreme conditions, 904L stands out as a superior material choice.
- 904L stainless steel boasts extraordinary heat resistance, tolerating temperatures up to 400 degrees Celsius. It is also highly amenable to heat treatment, with an optimal range from 1090 to 1175 degrees Celsius, followed by rapid cooling. This method of heat treatment is particularly effective for hardening 904L steel, ensuring longevity and enhanced performance in high-temperature applications.

What is 904L used for?
As previously highlighted, 904L stainless steel is renowned for its use in high-end watch construction due to its high purity and low sulfur content. In industrial sectors, its applications are manifold and include:

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L is highly compatible with standard shop fabrication practices, making it easy to weld and process.
Cold Forming
- 904L stainless steel is notably ductile and straightforward to form. However, the presence of molybdenum and nitrogen necessitates the use of more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working this alloy requires temperatures between 1562 and 2102°F (850-1150°C). Generally, hot working should be succeeded by a solution anneal and quench. For 904L, if the process is halted at temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C) followed by immediate quenching, the material may be used without further heat treatment. Ensuring the entire workpiece is quenched above 2012°F is crucial. If any part is heated or cooled below this temperature, or if cooling is too slow, a subsequent solution anneal and quenching are necessary. Solution annealing should be conducted at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- Alloy 904L's cold work hardening rate reduces its machinability compared to 410 and 304 stainless steels. Specialized techniques may be needed to achieve desired results.
Welding
- Most conventional welding techniques are well-suited for Alloy 904L. Its austenitic structure ensures an even distribution of alloying elements. However, elements like molybdenum, chromium, and nickel may redistribute during welding, potentially reducing corrosion resistance in some contexts. Segregation is minimal in 904L, which can be welded with filler metal of the same composition or without filler metal.
- For welding 904L, 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wire are recommended.
