GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that offers a remarkable blend of corrosion resistance and formability. This makes it suitable for a wide range of chemical applications, with automobile trim and appliance components standing out as the most common uses due to their frequent exposure to corrosive environments.
- Grade 430F, available in bar form for automatic screw machines, is the free-machining variant of Grade 430. For enhanced corrosion resistance, Grade 434, which includes molybdenum, provides similar yet improved properties.
- ASTM A240/A240M defines the characteristics for Grade 430 in flat rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Other forms such as forgings and bars have their own specifications but share similar qualities. For bar form, the properties of Grade 430F are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 exhibits excellent resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including many organic acids. The highest corrosion resistance is achieved when the material is polished or finely ground. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is on par with Grade 304. Additionally, like all ferritic grades, Grade 430 has high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- In contrast, the free-machining Grade 430F has reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high-sulfur, free-machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be alleviated by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C, and then quick air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Annealing: Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatments.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is necessary to ensure optimal performance and joint integrity.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be alleviated by a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C, enhancing overall durability.
- Grain refinement will not occur, maintaining the original grain structure.
MACHINING:
- Grade 430 is easier to machine than standard austenitic grades such as 304, offering streamlined processing.
- There is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool, which can be managed with proper tooling and techniques.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are easier to machine compared to those in the annealed condition, providing flexibility in manufacturing processes.
- Grade 430F, the free machining variant of 430, significantly enhances machinability for high-efficiency operations.
FABRICATION:
- A lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier than for grade 304, facilitating smoother fabrication processes.
- The lower ductility restricts extremely severe operations, necessitating careful planning for demanding applications.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction to maintain material integrity.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable, expanding its application range.
