- 904L stainless steel boasts minimal carbon content and features a high copper concentration, enhancing its resistance to potent acids such as sulfuric acid. The substantial nickel content safeguards against stress corrosion cracking, offering superior resistance to crevice corrosion as well. This makes it an ideal choice for demanding environments, including exposure to warm waters and chlorides. Whether facing moderate or aggressive conditions, 904L stands resilient.
- This exceptional stainless steel variant excels in heat resistance, enduring temperatures up to 400°C. It can be heat-treated between 1090°C and 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling, making it an optimal choice for hardening processes.

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L is easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.
Cold Forming
- 904L stainless steel exhibits notable ductility and forms effortlessly. However, the inclusion of molybdenum and nitrogen may necessitate the use of more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L stainless steel require temperatures from 1562°F to 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working should be followed by solution annealing and quenching. However, if hot forming ceases above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is quenched immediately, it may be used without further heat treatment. It is crucial to quench the entire workpiece from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling occurs below this threshold, or if cooling is overly slow, hot working must be followed by solution annealing and quenching. 904L should be solution annealed at temperatures between 1940°F and 2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L makes it less machinable compared to 410 and 304 stainless steels.
Welding
- Most conventional welding techniques are compatible with Alloy 904L. This austenitic plate material possesses a uniform austenitic structure with an equitable alloy element distribution. Elements like molybdenum, chromium, and nickel redistribute during welding solidification, potentially reducing corrosion resistance in some cases. However, this segregation is less pronounced in 904L, which typically requires filler metal matching the base metal's composition but can also be welded without filler metal.
- Welding consumables for 904L include 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wires.
