CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• This exceptional alloy showcases superior resilience compared to 304 in various atmospheric conditions, as well as numerous corrosive media, owing to its elevated chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• However, it is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and may experience stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
• Nonetheless, it is deemed resistant to potable water with chloride levels up to about 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, reducing to roughly 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Typically recognized as the go-to 'marine grade stainless steel,' its resistance to warm seawater is limited.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance with intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• The 316L grade offers enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• This alloy boasts exceptional weldability across all standard fusion methods, both with and without filler metals.
• To achieve maximum corrosion resistance, heavy welded sections in Grade 316 necessitate post-weld annealing, though this step is not required for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range for this alloy spans from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Note that it cannot be hardened through heat treatment processes.
• Special measures are necessary to accommodate a higher coefficient of thermal expansion, thus preventing warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Leading producers recommend a maximum forging temperature range between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C). Optimal
• corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• The 316/316L types, known for their exceptional toughness and ductility, can be easily cold worked through processes like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, and more, without any difficulty.
• Severe cold forming processes should be followed by annealing to alleviate stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is relatively more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its toughness.
• These types produce chips that are robust and strong.
• Using chip breakers and curlers is advisable.
• Employing the largest possible tool along with substantial amounts of cutting fluid is recommended.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds, as 316/316L work hardens swiftly.
