Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel offering superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. ASTM A240 outlines three subcategories: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930, each with distinct Ti or Nb stabilization requirements. Unless specified otherwise by the purchaser, any of these compositions may be provided as UNS S40900. It is crafted with advanced formability properties, commonly referred to as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form' in the industry.

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel known for its robust mechanical properties, notable corrosion resistance, and excellent weldability. Predominantly used in automotive exhaust systems, this versatile chromium stainless steel excels in high-temperature environments where performance is paramount over appearance.
- ASTM requirements, including ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, have evolved to use S40910, S40920, and S40930 as specialized sub-grades, enhancing the specifics of the traditional Grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying degrees with titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Any of these variations can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). For tubing, ASTM A268M continues to list the standard Grade 409.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers commendable resistance against both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While a light surface rust may develop, it serves to prevent further corrosion, although it may not be ideal for cosmetic uses. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410) but is lower than the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 displays impressive resistance to scaling at temperatures up to 815°C in intermittent service and up to 675°C in continuous service. These temperature thresholds may vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to 790-900°C and allow it to cool in the air. Note that this grade cannot be toughened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld, though pre-heating to 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes can be used, Grade 309 rods or electrodes are pre-qualified as per AS 1554.6, providing a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C can further enhance weld ductility.
For small sections, post-weld annealing is unnecessary. Automotive exhaust tubing is often welded autogenously, without filler metal.
To mitigate the effects of grain formation, welding should be performed with minimal heat.
Typical Applications
Ideal for automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties
- ASTM A268M delineates the specifications for Grade 409 in annealed tubing, while ASTM A240M specifies the composition for coil and sheet applications. Other items may have similar but not identical properties.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability is akin to that of carbon steel, ensuring ease of manufacturing.
