GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade renowned for its remarkable corrosion resistance and formability, coupled with robust mechanical properties. Its excellent resistance makes it suitable for various chemical applications, with its most prevalent uses being in automobile trims and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of Grade 430, supplied in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, the molybdenum-bearing counterpart, offers similar advantageous properties with enhanced corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the characteristics of Grade 430 for flat-rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Other products like forgings and bars possess similar, although not identical, qualities as per their specifications. For bar forms, the properties of Grade 430F are specified in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material shows good resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments including some organic acids. Maximum corrosion resistance is achieved when polished or ground to a high finish. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is on par with Grade 304. Like other ferritic grades, Grade 430 offers exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining Grade 430F exhibits significantly lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating within the 400-600°C range could cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be alleviated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slowly furnace cool to 600°C before quickly air cooling. Avoid slow cooling from 540-400°C as it causes embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat affected zone can be alleviated through a post-weld anneal conducted at 790-815°C, ensuring enhanced durability and performance.
- It is crucial to note that grain refinement will not occur, maintaining the alloy's intrinsic properties.
MACHINING:
- This alloy is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304, offering a more efficient machining process.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool, which should be monitored closely.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn present a more manageable machining experience than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free machining variant of 430, significantly simplifies the machining process.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate facilitates easier bending and forming compared to grade 304, streamlining fabrication processes.
- Nevertheless, lower ductility restricts extremely severe operations.
- For severe bends, it is recommended to align the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction to optimize results.
- Despite its characteristics, severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable, offering versatility in application.
