Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel, presenting a cost-effective alternative to typical Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304. With nickel replaced by manganese and nitrogen, Type 201 achieves high tensile strength through cold working, though it cannot be hardened by heat treatment. It is non-magnetic in the annealed state but becomes magnetic after cold working. This mid-range product is widely used in appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, and catering equipment, as well as automotive parts, carriages, and window trims. However, due to susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion, it is less suitable for outdoor structural applications exposed to seawater.
