SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed): This specification covers the requirements for annealed bars, forgings, and forging stock.
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged): This specification details the standards for solution treated and aged bars and forgings.
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable): This specification outlines the requirements for annealed and heat-treatable bars and forgings.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Advanced Heat Treatment Techniques: For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be performed at temperatures ranging from 1,700 to 1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
Versatile Heat Treatment for DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 Alloy: Our Grade 5 alloy can undergo various heat treatments to achieve desired properties. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench.
- 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool.
Optimized Properties through Rapid Quenching: In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections yields optimum properties. Larger sections and/or delayed quenching may result in less than optimum properties.
HARDNESS
Enhanced Hardness Levels: Typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution and aged condition, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.
Forgeability/Formability
- Optimal Forgeability of Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy: Our Grade 5 alloy is forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum of 35% reduction is recommended for achieving optimal properties.
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents significant challenges when forming at room temperature, even in its annealed state. To tackle severe forming operations such as bending or stretching, it is recommended to work with annealed material at elevated temperatures of up to 1,200°F (649°C), ensuring no detrimental impact on its mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming is best achieved through creep forming within a temperature range of 1,000-1,200°F (538-649°C).
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be machined effectively using austenitic stainless steel machining techniques. For optimal results, employ slow machining speeds, high feed rates, and robust tooling alongside copious amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is easily weldable in both its annealed condition and its solution and partially aged condition, with the aging process completed during post-weld heat treatment. To ensure quality, precautions are necessary to avoid contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be conducted within an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas shielding to protect the molten metal and adjacent heated zones. Additionally, spot, seam, and flash welding can be performed without the need for a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
Be aware that the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to contamination from hydrogen during improper pickling processes, and from oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, and brazing operations. Such contamination can lead to a reduction in ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Corrosion Resistance
Titanium is not recommended for use with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion
General corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in various media are provided in Table 1. CP titanium offers excellent corrosion resistance in a wide array of environments, including:
- Seawater and Brines
- Inorganic Salts
- Moist *** Gas
- Alkaline Solutions
- Oxidizing Acids
- Organics and Organic Acids
- Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP titanium shows robust resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions, outperforming stainless steels. It remains free from crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80 °C (176°F), regardless of pH levels, even in highly chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 titanium exhibits outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium demonstrates excellent resistance to erosion in flowing conditions.
Seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) demonstrates negligible impact on this material. Even the presence of abrasive particles, such as sand, only minimally affects corrosion resistance.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium exhibits no significant absorption of hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only under the following conditions:
- 1. pH is less than 3 or greater than 12
- 2. Temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
- 3. A mechanism exists for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit a unique immunity to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. Biofouling can occur in seawater due to the non-toxic nature of titanium alloys towards marine organisms. This can be minimized by chlorination or increasing water velocity through the heat exchanger.
Corrosion Fatigue
Titanium, unlike many other materials, maintains its fatigue performance in seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain unchanged whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned towards the noble end, near stainless steels, and typically acts as the cathode when coupled with other metals, thus not suffering galvanic corrosion. However, it can accelerate corrosion of the other metal. Coupling with more noble metals, such as graphite, further enhances titanium's passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod does not experience a reduction in fatigue properties when in contact with seawater. Both fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable when proper precautions are taken. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must be applied to both the OD and ID of the rod. The material must also be free from any grease or oil contaminants.
Grade 2 Titanium Rod typically undergoes manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input is recommended to minimize the heat-affected zone. Post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary for Titanium Rod.
