Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel tube with 11% chromium, making it the ideal choice for applications demanding superior oxidation and corrosion resistance, where carbon and coated steels fall short. While it boasts excellent oxidation resistance and formability, its lower chromium content means it has reduced corrosion resistance compared to grades like 304, 430, or 439, but it outperforms mild steel. The 409 tube can be efficiently roll-formed, stretch-bent, deep-drawn, and press-formed. Post-annealing, it remains non-hardening under cold treatments and forming processes such as press or stretch bending. With reasonable weldability, 409 should not be used in shock-loaded structures due to grain structure growth in heat-affected zones, which affects mechanical quality. This grade is frequently used in automotive exhaust systems and agricultural applications, where resistance to exhaust gases and high temperatures is critical. While 409's mechanical properties excel in functionality, its aesthetic appeal is limited, making it unsuitable for decorative purposes.
