431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional corrosion resistance across a diverse array of corrosive environments. While it demonstrates some resilience to saltwater exposure in cooler southern seas, its effectiveness diminishes in the warm, tropical waters. Compared to 304 Grade Material, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is approximately on par or slightly inferior. Optimal performance is achieved with a smooth surface, especially in its hardened and tempered state.
Our 431 Stainless Steel Rod resists scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for applications at temperatures above its tempering threshold due to a decline in mechanical properties.
Full anneal is impractical for this grade, as it hardens even when cooled slowly. For process annealing, heat to 620-660°C and air cool to achieve desired properties.
Hardening is achieved by heating between 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C is beneficial for intricate parts or those already hardened. Tempering should be performed according to mechanical requirements, at temperatures specified in the accompanying table.
Avoid tempering within the 425-600°C range due to a reduction in impact toughness, albeit to a lesser extent than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding presents challenges due to the risk of cracking. Pre-heating to 200-300°C is advisable before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 yield more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not a requirement. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. Once hardened above 30HRC, machining becomes more difficult. However, the Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 offers a significant boost in machining speeds and tool longevity.
Perfect for a range of uses including nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are specified for other forms like plate and forgings in their respective specifications.
