CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 offers exceptional resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking, providing long-term reliability in harsh environments.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code specifies a maximum temperature threshold of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this limit can cause embrittlement, necessitating careful consideration in high-temperature applications.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels when annealed. It can also be supplied in a cold-worked condition, achieving yield strengths exceeding 160 ksi. The material retains excellent toughness even at low temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C), ensuring reliable performance.
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is highly amenable to cold forming. Due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals may be necessary. Post-forming annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance, whether the forming process is hot or cold.

This commonly utilized duplex grade offers double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades. It excels in providing superior fatigue strength and exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the most severe conditions.
Manufacturers advise a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not uniform, cooler edges may result in cracking.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube boasts exceptional formability across diverse manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even with robust equipment, the significant springback caused by the high strength of this grade must be meticulously accounted for.
Machining Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels due to the higher cutting forces required, resulting in faster tool wear. For optimal results, follow these guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions short to minimize vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is not excessively long, maintaining a sharp edge while providing adequate strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to keep the depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
