GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a high-performance duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar with an impressive composition of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that is double that of traditional austenitic grades. Its robust construction ensures superb fatigue strength and exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With its elevated chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- Its chemical composition also ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and effective at temperatures up to 302°F (150°C).
- Contains ferrite, providing excellent performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is subject to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) for even short durations, making it unsuitable for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 features good weldability.
- Generally, welding should be done with filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Annealing should be conducted within the temperature range of 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened through heat treatment, but can be work-hardened.
- Special attention is required to offset the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Manufacturers generally recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, the edges might cool faster than the bulk, potentially causing cracking in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
Duplex 2205 demonstrates excellent formability in various fabrications. However, its high strength may pose challenges, necessitating equipment with sufficient power and allowing for higher spring-back due to the grade's strength.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 presents a slight challenge compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steel. This grade requires higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. To achieve optimal results, adhere to these machining guidelines: A) Employ a robust, rigid machine with a strong and secure tool and workpiece mount; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibrations; C) Maintain a tool nose radius that is as short as possible to ensure carbide sharpness while providing sufficient strength; D) Sequence machining operations so that the depth of cut always penetrates beneath the work-hardened layer from the preceding step.
