Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a state-of-the-art super duplex steel boasting low carbon content (up to 0.03%), chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). Meticulously engineered to meet the stringent demands of applications requiring unparalleled strength and corrosion resistance, Duplex 2507 is ideally suited for chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater applications. Its superior resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, combined with high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, ensures extraordinary resilience against pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is crafted using state-of-the-art methods similar to those employed for other high-alloy steels. The process begins in an electric arc furnace where scrap steel is melted and enriched with desired alloys. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, a critical phase where decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases take place.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically infused into the steel. The refined steel is then directed to the ladle furnace for further inclusion adjustment.
- After initial processing, the molten steel proceeds to the casting phase, where it can be formed into either large ingots or continuously produced blooms. These solid blooms or ingots undergo reheating, forging, or rolling to achieve the specified thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, a solution annealing heat treatment is performed, followed by rapid water quenching.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be manufactured using both hot and cold forming techniques. For hot forming, temperatures should range between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot forming, solution annealing at 1052-1125 °C is mandatory, followed by quick water quenching. Cold forming methods, which encompass bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, also necessitate subsequent heat treatment involving solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is classified as a super duplex stainless steel, characterized by a microstructure that incorporates both ferrite and austenite in nearly equal proportions. This unique dual-phase structure imbues duplex stainless steel with exceptional corrosion resistance and robust mechanical strength. Despite these shared features, varying duplex steel grades offer different levels of corrosion resistance. While all duplex steels exhibit strong resistance against localized corrosion, such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the degree of resistance is contingent on the specific grade and alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range, with super duplex stainless steel boasting a PREN number between 38 and 45.
