Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel offering superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel. Known for its robust mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and excellent weldability, Grade 409 is predominantly utilized for automotive exhaust systems. This material is ideal for applications where these qualities are prioritized over appearance, especially under high-temperature conditions.
- ASTM requirements, specifically ASTM A240M for flat-rolled steel, now classify S40910, S40920, and S40930 as distinct sub-grades instead of the general Grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying degrees with titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Each can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). ASTM A268M lists standard Grade 409 for tubular products.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 excels in resisting both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. In most environments, it develops a light surface rust that acts as a protective layer, preventing further corrosion. However, this rust is not suitable for cosmetic applications. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (such as Grade 410), but it is lower than the 17% chromium Grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 is resistant to scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. However, these temperature limits may vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- To anneal, heat Grade 409 to 790-900 degrees Celsius and then air cool. This grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld, with a recommended pre-heat of 150-260°C. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods can be used, welding with Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified per AS 1554.6, producing a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C improves weld ductility.
Welding small sections does not require post-weld annealing. In automotive exhaust tubing, welding is usually performed without filler metal (autogenously).
To minimize the adverse effects of grain growth, all welding should be performed with minimal heat input.
Typical Applications
Widely used in automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties
- ASTM A268M specifies the properties of Grade 409 for annealed tubing. ASTM A240M outlines the composition for additional grades in coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other products may include similar but not identical properties.
FORMING:
- Type 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability characteristics are very similar to those of carbon steel.
