Type 904L is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel celebrated for its superior corrosion resistance. The 904L alloy (UNS N08904) stands out as a super austenitic stainless steel, suitable for a myriad of process settings, boasting moderate to high corrosion resistance. Its composition of high chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper ensures exceptional resistance to various forms of corrosion. With a highly alloyed chemistry featuring 25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum, 904L surpasses 316L and 317L molybdenum-enhanced stainless steels in resisting chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and general corrosion. Originally designed to withstand dilute sulfuric acid environments, 904L is also resilient against most organic and inorganic acids, including hot phosphoric acid. This alloy is easily weldable and can be seamlessly handled using standard shop fabrication procedures.

- Throughout the production process, we meticulously measure the product's diameter, thickness, and surface. While our standard delivery time is 7-15 days, special size products may extend delivery to 20 days.

What are 904L's Best Qualities?
- This exceptional grade of stainless steel boasts a low carbon content and a high copper concentration, enhancing its resistance to potent acids such as sulfuric acid. The substantial nickel content endows it with formidable resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Moreover, it excels in resisting both crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, vulnerabilities that can undermine other steel varieties. Its versatility allows for deployment in diverse demanding environments, including warm waters and chloride exposure. It proves ideal for both moderate and aggressive conditions.
- Renowned for its remarkable heat resistance, this stainless steel endures temperatures up to an impressive 400 degrees Celsius. The material can be heat-treated within the range of 1090 to 1175 degrees Celsius, followed by rapid cooling. This heat treatment process is perfect for hardening 904L steel, ensuring superior performance.

What is 904L Used For?

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L can be seamlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.
Cold Forming
- The ductility of 904L allows for easy forming. However, due to the inclusion of molybdenum and nitrogen, more robust processing equipment may be required compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures necessitate temperatures between 1562-2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working should be succeeded by a solution anneal and quench. However, for 904L, if the hot forming process is halted at a temperature above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is promptly quenched, additional heat treatment may not be required. It is crucial that the entire workpiece undergoes quenching from above 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling drops below 2012°F (1100°C), or if cooling is too slow, it should be followed by solution annealing and quenching. 904L requires solution annealing at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L renders it less machinable than 410 and 304 stainless steels.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding methods. Austenitic plate materials possess a uniform austenitic structure and an equitable distribution of alloying elements. During the solidification post-welding, elements such as molybdenum, chromium, and nickel are redistributed. These segregations remain in the cast structure of the weld, sometimes diminishing corrosion resistance. However, segregation is less pronounced in 904L. Typically, it is welded with a filler metal of the same composition as the base metal, though it can also be welded without filler metal.
- The welding consumables for 904L include 20 25 CuL covered electrode and 20 25 CuL wire.
