431 Stainless Steel Bar Material exhibits exceptional resistance to a diverse array of corrosive environments. It can withstand salt water in colder, southern seas but may face challenges in the warmer tropical waters. Compared to the 304 Grade Material, 431 Round Bar Material offers similar, if not slightly lower, corrosion resistance. Optimal performance is achieved when the material features a smooth surface in a hardened and tempered state.
This alloy resists scaling at temperatures up to 925°C in intermittent service and 870°C in continuous service. However, it's generally not recommended for applications exceeding the relevant tempering temperature due to potential reductions in mechanical properties.
Full anneal is impractical for this grade due to its tendency to harden even with slow cooling. For process annealing, heat to 620-660°C followed by air cooling.
Hardening is achieved by heating the material to 980-1065°C, maintaining this temperature for approximately 30 minutes, followed by quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C may be beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Tempering should be conducted to meet specific mechanical requirements, with temperatures outlined in the accompanying table.
Avoid tempering within the 425-600°C range due to a decrease in impact toughness, although this effect is less pronounced than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding this grade can be challenging due to the risk of cracking. Pre-heating to 200-300°C before welding is advisable. While Grade 410 filler rod is suitable, using Grades 308L, 309, or 310 can result in more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not mandatory. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, machining becomes more challenging if the material is hardened beyond 30HRC. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and extends tool life.
This alloy is ideal for manufacturing nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
The specified properties of this material are for bar products under ASTM A276. Other product forms such as plates and forgings have similar, though not necessarily identical, properties as specified in their respective standards.
