ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this threshold may lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 exhibits over twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels when annealed. It is also available in the cold-worked condition, boasting yield strength exceeding 160 ksi. This alloy maintains excellent toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be efficiently cold-formed, albeit with a high work-hardening rate that may necessitate intermediate anneals. Post-hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. This popular duplex stainless steel grade boasts a yield strength that is double that of conventional austenitic grades. It also offers outstanding resistance to fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, crevice and pitting corrosion, erosion, and general corrosion under severe conditions.
Most manufacturers advise a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not uniformly compact, cooler edges may risk cracking.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube demonstrates exceptional formability across a range of manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even with adequate equipment, the increased springback due to the high strength of this grade must be addressed.
Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging to machine compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires higher cutting forces, resulting in faster tool wear. Here are some machining guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions short to reduce vibration; C) Avoid making the tool nose radius longer than necessary to maintain a sharp edge while ensuring adequate strength; D) Plan the machining sequence so the depth of cut always stays below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
