  • 904L stainless steel stands out for its exceptional heat resistance, enduring temperatures up to an astounding 400 degrees Celsius. It's heat treatable within the 1090 to 1175 degrees Celsius range, followed by a rapid cooling process. This heat treatment method is particularly effective for hardening 904L steel, enhancing its durability and performance.
  • Due to its unique composition, 904L stainless steel is nonmagnetic. It offers excellent weldability, formability, and toughness across a wide range of conditions, making it a highly versatile choice for various applications.

What is 904L used for?

Fabrication Data

  • Alloy 904L is remarkably easy to weld and process using standard shop fabrication techniques.

Cold Forming

  • 904L stainless steel is notably ductile and easy to form. However, the presence of molybdenum and nitrogen necessitates the use of more powerful processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.

Hot Forming

  • Hot working procedures for 904L require temperatures between 1562 to 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working should be followed by solution annealing and quenching. However, if hot forming stops above 2012°F (1100°C) and immediate quenching occurs, further heat treatment may be unnecessary. It is crucial to quench the entire workpiece from above 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling occurs below 2012°F (1100°C), or cooling is too slow, follow hot working with solution annealing and quenching. For optimal results, solution anneal 904L at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).

Machining

  • The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L renders it less machinable than 410 and 304 stainless steels, requiring special attention during machining processes.

Welding

  • Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding methods. Its uniform austenitic structure and even distribution of alloying elements ensure minimal segregation, maintaining excellent corrosion resistance. While typically welded with a filler metal of the same composition as the base metal, it can also be welded without filler metal.
  • For welding 904L, use 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wire to ensure optimal weld quality and performance.
