HEAT TREATMENT

  • For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, annealing can be conducted at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
    DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 - 1,400°F (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cooling
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cooling
  • 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 - 1,750°F (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quenching
  • 4. Aging: 975 - 1,025°F (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours, air cooling

Rapid quenching of small sections in the solution treated and aged condition yields optimal properties. For larger section sizes or delayed quenching, properties may be less than optimal.

HARDNESS

In the annealed state, typical hardness measures Rockwell C 30-34, whereas in the solution treated and aged state, it measures Rockwell C 35-39.

Additionally, hot sizing or forming can be achieved through creep forming within the temperature range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C), ensuring precision without altering material integrity.

Machinability

The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be effectively machined using austenitic stainless steel methods. The process demands slow machining speeds, high feeds, and the use of rigid tools. A plentiful supply of non-chlorinated cutting fluids enhances precision and extends tool life, ensuring a smooth and efficient operation.

Weldability

The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable in both annealed and solution-partially aged conditions. Post-weld heat treatment enables aging. To prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, welding should be performed in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas protection. Techniques such as fusion, spot, seam, and flash welding can be executed without a protective atmosphere, ensuring structural integrity and performance.

Special Considerations

Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rods can suffer from hydrogen contamination due to improper pickling and from oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treating, and brazing. Corrosion Resistance

Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.

General Corrosion
