CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless steel rod

  • 316L stainless steel rod offers exceptional resistance, outperforming 304 in various atmospheric environments and numerous corrosive media, thanks to its elevated chromium content.
    Additionally, the inclusion of molybdenum enhances its durability.
  • However, it is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and may experience stress corrosion cracking at temperatures exceeding 122°F (50°C).
  • It is considered resistant to potable water containing up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, withstanding up to 500mg/L at
    140°F (60°C).
  • Often referred to as the "marine grade stainless steel," yet it is not immune to warm sea water's corrosive effects.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

  • Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance, capable of intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
  • Grade 316L stands out with superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Boasting excellent weldability through all standard fusion techniques, with or without filler metals.
  • For maximum corrosion resistance, heavy welded sections of Grade 316 require post-weld annealing, which is unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

  • The annealing temperature range for this alloy is between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
  • Note that it cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
  • Special precautions should be taken to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
  • Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) to ensure optimal results.
  • To achieve the best corrosion resistance, it's essential to give the forgings a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Given its extreme toughness and ductility, 316/316L stainless steel rod can be readily cold worked through roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
    and bending, with ease.
  • It is recommended that severely cold formed parts be annealed to relieve stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Type 316/316L stainless steel rod is more challenging to machine compared to Type 304 due to its inherent toughness.
  • The machining process of 316/316L produces tough and strong chips.
  • Utilizing chip breakers and curlers is advisable.
  • Employing large tools with abundant cutting fluid is beneficial.
  • Consider using heavy positive feeds at low speeds to counteract the rapid work hardening of 316/316L.
