The global leader in commercially pure titanium rod manufacturing services

Titanium round bars are one of Daxun Alloy China's most sought-after titanium products. The manufacturing process of Grade 1 Titanium bars is highly mechanized compared to blocks and plates. Available in over forty distinct grades, the most popular are Grade 5, Grade 2, and Grade 1. These bars come in diameters up to 14 inches. Pure Titanium Grade 1 boasts excellent ductility and cold formability, making it ideal for deep drawing. It is renowned for its superb general and seawater corrosion resistance, as well as resistance to oxidizing, neutral, and mildly reducing media, such as chlorides. With a low density (about half that of nickel-based alloys), high strength-to-weight ratio, and excellent corrosion resistance, titanium is perfect for various harsh chemical environments.

SPECIFICATIONS

AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)

AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)

AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)

HEAT TREATMENT

  • For high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, anneal at 1,700-1,900°F (927-1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275-1,400°F (691-760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool.
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000-1,200°F (538-649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool.
  • 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675-1,750°F (913-954°C), 1 hour, water quench.
  • 4. Aging: 975-1,025°F (524-552°C), 4 to 8 hours, air cool.

For optimal properties, rapidly quench small sections in the solution-treated and aged condition. Larger sections or delayed quenching might yield less optimal properties.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness is Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition, and Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution-treated and aged condition.

Forgeability/Formability

  • The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum of 35% reduction is recommended to achieve optimal properties.
  • The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents significant challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. However, demanding forming operations such as bending or stretching are achievable with annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming can be effectively performed through creep forming within the temperature range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).

Machinability

The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is machinable using methods akin to those for austenitic stainless steel, characterized by slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tooling, and abundant use of non-chlorinated cutting fluids to ensure precision and durability.

Weldability

The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable in both the annealed state and the solution and partially aged conditions, where aging occurs during post-weld heat treatment. To prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, fusion welding must be conducted in an inert gas environment. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be performed without the need for protective atmospheres.

Special Considerations

The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to contamination by hydrogen during improper pickling and by oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes such as forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can lead to a reduction in ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming capabilities.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod: Reliable and robust for a wide array of applications.

Corrosion Resistance: Unmatched protection against corrosive environments.

Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***: Important usage limitations for safe application.

General Corrosion: Outstanding resistance in various environments.

The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in various media are detailed in Table 1. CP titanium offers excellent resistance to a diverse range of environments including:

  • Seawater and Brines: Exceptional performance in marine environments.
  • Inorganic Salts: Superior resistance in harsh chemical conditions.
  • Moist *** Gas: Effective protection in ***-rich environments.
  • Alkaline Solutions: Robust resistance to alkaline mediums.
  • Oxidizing Acids: Reliable performance in oxidizing acidic environments.
  • Organics and Organic Acids: Excellent resistance to organic substances.
  • Sulfur Compounds: Strong defense against sulfur compounds.

Crevice Corrosion: Superior resistance compared to stainless steels, effective in salt solutions and temperatures below 80°C (176°F), even under super chlorinated conditions.

CP titanium shows excellent resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. CP titanium will not exhibit crevice corrosion at temperatures under 80°C (176°F) regardless of pH, even under super chlorinated conditions.

Stress Corrosion Cracking: Grade 2 titanium demonstrates outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.

Grade 2 titanium shows excellent resistance to stress corrosion (SCC) cracking in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.

Erosion Corrosion: Titanium provides superior resistance to erosion in flowing environments, ensuring longevity and durability.

Titanium shows excellent resistance to erosion in flowing environments, ensuring longevity and durability.
Remarkably, seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) exhibits minimal impact on this extraordinary material. Even the presence of abrasive particles, such as sand, only slightly affects its corrosion resistance.

Hydrogen Embrittlement

Incredibly, titanium does not significantly absorb hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically only occurs under the following stringent conditions:

  1. The pH level is either below 3 or above 12.
  2. The temperature surpasses 176°F (80°C).
  3. There exists a mechanism for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or an impressed current.

Bio-Corrosion

Titanium alloys showcase unparalleled immunity to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. While titanium alloys are non-toxic to marine organisms, biofouling can occur in seawater. This can be effectively minimized through chlorination or by boosting the water velocity through heat exchangers.

Corrosion Fatigue

Unlike numerous other materials, titanium maintains its fatigue performance even in the presence of seawater. Both its fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater environments.

Galvanic Corrosion

Positioned towards the noble end of the galvanic series near stainless steels, titanium generally acts as the cathode when paired with other metals. As such, it remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion but may accelerate the corrosion of the other metal. Coupling titanium with more noble metals, like graphite, further enhances its passivity.

Fatigue Properties

Distinctive from many other materials, Grade 2 Titanium Rod retains its fatigue properties even in seawater. The fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain unchanged whether assessed in air or seawater.

Weldability

CP2 Grade Titanium Rod boasts excellent weldability, provided necessary precautions are taken. Due to titanium's reactivity, it requires an inert gas shield on both its OD and ID. Ensure the material is free of grease or oil contamination for optimal results.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod is predominantly welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. To minimize the heat-affected zone, a low heat input is recommended. Post-weld heat treatment is typically unnecessary for Titanium Rod.
