General Properties
The Alloy 420 Stainless Steel Plate, a derivative of Alloy 410, is a hardenable martensitic stainless steel bar known for its exceptional strength and hardness. It comprises a minimum of 12% chromium, ensuring robust corrosion resistance. This variant contains more carbon than Alloy 410, enhancing its tensile strength and hardness. Post-annealing, it exhibits good ductility but can be hardened to a remarkable minimum Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC, the highest among the 12% chromium grades. Due to its hardening potential, welding Alloy 420 is infrequent but possible. Martensitic stainless steels, designed for superior hardness, may sacrifice certain other characteristics. Their corrosion resistance is lower compared to standard austenitic grades, with limited operational temperatures, as they lose ductility in sub-zero conditions and strength upon over-tempering at high temperatures. For optimal corrosion resistance, hardening and subsequent surface grinding or polishing are recommended.

The 420 stainless steel is ideal for applications necessitating excellent corrosion resistance and high hardness. It is generally unsuitable for use at temperatures surpassing 800°F (427°C) due to rapid hardening and diminished corrosion resistance. Common applications for the 420 alloy include:

Less resistant than austenitic grades and 17% chromium ferritic alloys.

Not advisable for use above relevant tempering temperatures due to reduced mechanical properties.
Scaling temperature is approximately 1202°F (650°C).
Machinability
Characterized by hard, elongated chip buildup.
Comparable to machining certain high carbon tool steels.
Welding
Welding is typically avoided due to air hardening characteristics.
Preheat to 300-400°F before welding.
Temper for 2 hours post-welding.
Hot Working
Gradually ramp up to 1400°F, then to 2000-2200°F is recommended.
Cool slowly post-furnace work to prevent cracking.
Reheating is required to keep the working temperature above 1600°F.
Cold Working
Can withstand only light cold working.
Aggressive forming may lead to cracking.
Annealing
Anneal at 1550-1650°F (843-900°C).
Allow the furnace to cool slowly.
Tempering
Temper at 300-400°F.
Air cool to achieve maximum hardness and corrosion resistance.
Hardening
Soak at 1850-1950°F, then quench in hot oil.
