GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade renowned for its remarkable blend of corrosion resistance, formability, and mechanical properties. Its exceptional resistance to a variety of chemical environments makes it an ideal choice for numerous applications, with automobile trim and appliance components being the most prevalent.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, available in bar form, tailor-made for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, the molybdenum-bearing counterpart of Grade 430, boasts the same advantageous characteristics, with added corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M delineates the characteristics of Grade 430 for flat rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Other forms, such as forgings and bars, possess similar qualities, albeit with slight variations according to their respective specifications. The properties of Grade 430F for bar form are specified in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material demonstrates excellent resistance to diverse corrosive environments, including various and some organic acids. Optimal corrosion resistance is attained when the material is highly polished or finely ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion rivals that of Grade 304. As with all ferritic grades, Grade 430 excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, exhibits considerably reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, paralleling other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Capable of withstanding up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service, Grade 430 resists oxidation. Prolonged heating in the 400-600°C range can cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, slow furnace cool to 600°C, followed by rapid air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will induce embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Preheat at 150-200°C if welding is required.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be effectively alleviated by performing a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C.
- Grain refinement is not achievable under these conditions.
MACHINING:
- Compared to standard austenitic grades like 304, this material is significantly easier to machine.
- However, there remains a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Lightly drawn bars offer easier machinability than those in the annealed state.
- Grade 430F, a free-machining variant of 430, allows for exceptionally easier machining.
FABRICATION:
- A lower work-hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier compared to grade 304.
- However, lower ductility restricts very severe fabrication operations.
- Severe bends should be oriented with the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible and achievable.
