What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a high-performance super duplex steel, distinguished by its low carbon content (up to 0.03%), high chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%) composition. This specialized alloy is engineered to meet the rigorous demands of applications requiring exceptional strength and unparalleled corrosion resistance. Ideal for chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater applications, Duplex 2507 is highly resistant to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. The steel's high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content provide superior defense against pitting, crevice, and general corrosion, making it a top choice for critical industrial uses.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The production of Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors that of other contemporary high-alloy steels. The process begins in an electric arc furnace, melting scrap steel and incorporating the necessary alloying elements. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where crucial steps such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases are carried out.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically added to the steel. The molten material is then directed to a ladle furnace for further inclusion adjustments.
- Subsequent to these initial stages, the steel is cast into either individual ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solid forms undergo reheating and are then forged or rolled to achieve the desired thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, a solution annealing heat treatment is conducted, followed by a water quenching step.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be manufactured via hot or cold forming methods. For hot forming, the operational temperature range is between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot forming, a solution annealing process should be executed at a minimum temperature of 1052-1125 °C, followed by rapid water quenching. Cold forming techniques like bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing also necessitate a subsequent heat treatment involving solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel falls under the category of super duplex stainless steels, which feature a balanced microstructure of ferrite and austenite phases. This unique composition imparts both high corrosion resistance and robust mechanical strength. While all duplex stainless steels exhibit good resistance to localized corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the specific resistance levels vary with different grades.
