General properties:
- Ferritic, pure chromium, non-hardenable grade 430 offers excellent formability and corrosion resistance along with practical mechanical qualities. Its ability to withstand *** corrosion makes it valuable in certain chemical applications; it is primarily used in appliance parts and automotive trim.
- For use in automatic screw machines, grade 430F is a more machinable variation of this grade that is available in bar form. Grade 434, containing molybdenum, shares the beneficial characteristics of grade 430 but with enhanced corrosion resistance due to the added molybdenum.
- ASTM A240/A240M specifies the high-quality standards for flat-rolled 430 stainless steel products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Although similar specifications exist for other forms like bars and forgings, they are not often identical. For instance, ASTM A582 outlines the characteristics for Grade 430F bars.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance across a range of corrosive environments, including *** and certain organic acids. The highest level of corrosion resistance is obtained when the surface is highly polished or ground. Overall, its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to that of grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 showcases exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The 430F grade, being non-free machining, exhibits significantly lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 can withstand oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may cause the material to become brittle at room temperature, which can be rectified through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- • Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, slow furnace cool to 600°C, then quickly air cool. Avoid slow cooling from 540-400°C to prevent embrittlement.
- • Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- Note: This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- • Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- • Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat affected zone can be alleviated by a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C.
- • Grain refinement will not occur.
MACHINING:
- • Easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- • Tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool still exists.
- • Bars that have been lightly drawn are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- • Grade 430F, the free machining version of 430, offers significantly easier machinability.
FABRICATION:
- • Lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming relatively easier compared to grade 304.
- • Lower ductility limits very severe operations.
- • Severe bends should be made with the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction.
- • Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
