CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 showcases excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures can lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts more than double the strength of traditional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed state. It is also available in cold-worked condition, with yield strength surpassing 160 ksi. It retains excellent toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is amenable to cold forming. However, due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate annealing may be necessary. Post hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are extraordinary, featuring advanced extrusion and cold working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We are proud to operate one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a premium ferritic-austenitic alloy containing 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it offers twice the yield strength of standard austenitic grades. Renowned for its superior fatigue strength, it excels in resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion even under harsh conditions.
Leading manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece isn't compact, the edges may cool faster than the bulk, risking cracks in cooler areas.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube offers exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. While the high strength of Duplex 2205 is advantageous, it does pose challenges. Even with robust equipment, the increased springback due to this grade's high strength must be carefully considered.
Machining Duplex 2205 can be slightly more challenging than machining 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The process demands higher cutting forces, resulting in quicker tool wear. Here are some essential machining guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Limit the tool nose radius to ensure the carbide remains sharp while maintaining sufficient strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to ensure the depth of cut stays below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
