No.2D	Annealing and pickling are performed after cold rolling; material is soft with surface of silver-white luster; used for general applications and deep drawing.

Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China

Grade 904L:

• Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high-alloy, low-carbon steel. Due to the inclusion of copper, this grade exhibits significant resistance to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid. It also provides robust defense against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
• This grade showcases exceptional formability and weldability and remains non-magnetic under all conditions. Thanks to its austenitic structure, it maintains excellent toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
• 904L stainless steel contains significant amounts of nickel and molybdenum, which are quite costly. The advent of Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) offers a more economical alternative for many applications where 904L was historically used, leading to its reduced frequency of use.

Corrosion Resistance:

• Beyond its original resistance to sulfuric acid, 904L demonstrates exceptional resilience in various conditions. It is highly resistant to warm seawater and high chloride environments, boasting a PRE of 35. The elevated nickel content provides superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to typical austenitic grades. Additionally, the incorporation of copper enhances its durability against sulfuric and other reducing acids, particularly in the highly aggressive 'mid concentration' range.
• The 904L grade offers corrosion resistance that sits between the general austenitic grade 316L and the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades featuring 6% molybdenum and equivalent elements.
• Compared to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, 904L exhibits less resistance to intense conditions.
• For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in demanding environments, solution treating the steel after cold work is essential.

Heat Resistance:

• 904L offers robust oxidation resistance but suffers from structural instability at elevated temperatures, including the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. Usage above 550°C is not recommended. According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the design stress values for 904L are specified up to 371°C.

Heat Treatment:

• Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. Note that this grade cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.

Welding:

• 904L can be welded successfully using all standard techniques. Due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is prone to heat cracking, especially in restricted weldments, so caution is advised. Pre-heating is not recommended, and post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for welding processes.

Fabrication:

• Given its high purity and low sulfur content, 904L does not machine as efficiently as machinability-optimized grades. However, it can still be machined using conventional methods. Achieving a small bend radius is straightforward, typically performed cold. If the fabricated item is expected to face severe stress corrosion cracking, subsequent annealing should be considered, though it is not usually required.

Typical Applications:

• 904L is ideal for the following applications: processing plants for sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids; pulp and paper processing; gas scrubbing components; seawater cooling equipment; oil refinery parts; and wires for electrostatic precipitators.

Specified Properties:

• According to ASTM A240M, these properties are mandatory for flat rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Similar properties are specified for other products such as pipes, tubes, and bars, though they may vary slightly.

Each stainless steel sheet features a protective film on the finished side to prevent wear and marks during fabrication or installation. This film is easily removable, while the back side remains unfinished.
