CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Boasting superior resistance compared to 304 in various atmospheric conditions and numerous corrosive environments, thanks to enhanced chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• Susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride settings, and stress corrosion cracking beyond approximately 122°F (50°C).
• Deemed resistant to potable water containing up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, decreasing to 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Commonly recognized as the "marine grade stainless steel" - though it does not withstand warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance during intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• 316L grade offers greater resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Displays exceptional weldability via all standard fusion techniques, with or without filler metals.
• For maximum corrosion resistance, heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing, but this step is unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range spans 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special measures must be taken to accommodate the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers suggest a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Forging should not be conducted below 1700°F (927°C). Optimal
• corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Types 316/316L, being exceptionally tough and malleable, can be effortlessly cold worked through methods like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., without significant difficulty.
• Parts that have been severely cold formed should be annealed to alleviate stresses.

MACHINABILITY:

• The toughness of Type 316/316L renders it somewhat more challenging to machine compared to Type 304.
• 316/316L features chip characteristics that are robust and sturdy.
• Employ chip breakers and curlers for best results.
• Use the largest possible tool and ample amounts of cutting fluid.
• Considering heavy positive feeds at low speeds is advisable, as 316/316L work hardens swiftly.
