Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a high-performance duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar, enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Renowned as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength double that of standard austenitic grades. This exceptional material offers outstanding fatigue strength and resists stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the harshest conditions.

- With its elevated levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, Duplex 2205 provides superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L stainless steels in most environments.
- The alloy's chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content also grant it high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic conditions.
- It is also resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking, tolerating temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite ensures Duplex 2205 performs well in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205 exhibits good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, comparable to other duplex stainless steels.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement if exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) for even short durations, making it unsuitable for use above this threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 offers excellent weldability.
- However, it is generally recommended not to weld without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The optimal annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment, though it does work-harden.
- Special attention is required to manage its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to avoid warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Producers typically recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). Should the workpiece be non-compact, cooler edges may risk cracking due to significant temperature differences.

Duplex 2205 is renowned for its commendable formability across a diverse range of fabrications. However, its impressive strength can present certain challenges. It's crucial to account for the higher spring-back effect due to this grade's superior strength, even if the equipment used has ample power.
MACHINABILITY
Machining duplex stainless steel bar 2205 is somewhat more demanding compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steel. It necessitates higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Consider these machining guidelines: A) Employ a robust, rigid machine with a strong tool and workpiece mount; B) Maintain short tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is as short as necessary to achieve a sharp edge while maintaining adequate strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to ensure the depth of cut stays beneath the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
