GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade that merges exceptional corrosion resistance and formability with reliable mechanical properties. Its chemical resistance makes it suitable for various applications, predominantly in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant, available in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, enriched with molybdenum, shares similar attributes with Grade 430 but offers enhanced corrosion resistance.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the attributes of 430 for flat rolled products like plate, sheet, and coil. Other forms, such as forgings and bars, have analogous but not identical properties. For bar form, the characteristics of Grade 430F are specified in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material offers robust resistance to various corrosive environments, including some organic acids. The highest resistance levels are achieved when the material is highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to grade 304, and it has very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, shows a marked reduction in resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may make it brittle at room temperature, which can be counteracted by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C followed by quick air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat the material to 150-200°C if welding is required to ensure optimal results.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be alleviated by performing a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C, ensuring structural integrity.
- Note that grain refinement will not occur in this process.
MACHINING:
- This grade is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304, enhancing manufacturing efficiency.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool that must be managed.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are more machinable than those in the annealed condition, providing greater flexibility.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining variant of 430, is considerably easier to machine, simplifying the fabrication process.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier compared to grade 304, allowing for simpler shaping.
- However, the lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- When making severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction for best results.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable, expanding its applicability.
