INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands as the epitome of titanium alloys, renowned for its duplex alpha+beta composition. Enhanced with aluminium as an alpha stabiliser and vanadium as a beta stabiliser, this high-strength marvel excels even at cryogenic temperatures nearing 800°F (427°C). Widely embraced across industries, ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is a cornerstone in annealing, solution treatment, and ageing processes. Its applications span from compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure containers; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; to fasteners and critically important forgings, celebrated for their superior strength-to-weight ratio.
  • The alloy's journey begins with initial melting through vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). This process is followed by one or two steps of vacuum arc remelting to achieve purity and performance.

  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers versatile heat treatment methods to suit a range of performance requirements.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 - 1,400°F (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 - 1,750°F (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 - 1,025°F (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours, air cool
  • Optimal properties are achieved in the solution treated and aged condition, particularly with rapidly quenched small cross sections.
    However, larger section sizes or delays in quenching may result in properties below optimal values.

HARDNESS

In the annealed state, typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, whereas in the solution treated and aged condition, it reaches approximately Rockwell C 35-39.

FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are meticulously forged at 1,750°F (954°C), concluding at an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). To achieve the best outcomes, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy presents significant challenges in forming at room temperature, even in its annealed state. Consequently, rigorous forming processes such as bending or stretching can be effectively performed on annealed material at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without degrading its mechanical properties. For precise hot sizing or forming, creep forming is a reliable method at temperatures between 1,000 and 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).
