STANDARDS
- ASTM/ASME: A240 UNS S32205/S31803
- EURONORM: 1.4462 X2CrNiMoN 22.5.3
- AFNOR: Z3 CrNi 22.05 AZ
- DIN: W.Nr 1.4462
CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 showcases superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The presence of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen delivers high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic environments.
- Exhibits excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and can withstand temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- Its ferrite content ensures commendable performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205 mirrors other duplex stainless steels with good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement if exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) for even short periods. Thus, its usage is not recommended beyond this temperature threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Features commendable weldability.
- Generally, it should not be welded without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Optimal annealing temperature ranges from 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened through heat treatment, though it does exhibit work-hardening characteristics.
- Special care must be taken to accommodate its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the work piece shape isn't compact, the edges may cool significantly more than the bulk, potentially leading to cracking in these cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 exhibits exceptional formability across various fabrication processes. However, the material's high strength can present challenges. Even with adequately powerful equipment, one must account for the increased spring-back due to the grade's notable strength.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 presents a slightly greater challenge to process compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. This is due to the higher cutting forces required, leading to quicker tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Utilize robust, rigid machinery with extremely strong, secure mounting of tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by keeping tool extensions as short as possible, C) Employ tools with a nose radius no larger than necessary and sharp edges for carbides while still ensuring adequate strength, and D) Plan machining sequences to ensure cuts always go below the work-hardened layer formed during previous passes.
Features of 2205 stainless steel coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. This alloy boasts superior performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steel. The alloy's mixed austenite/ferrite microstructure, coupled with its alloying elements, provides outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 offers acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C for specific applications, although it can become brittle if exposed to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C for prolonged periods. Type 2205 stainless steel strip, coil, and sheet are versatile and can be employed in a wide array of applications.
What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil can vary significantly based on the cold rolling methods and subsequent surface treatments. These treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and other specialized finishes:
- NO.1: The NO.1 surface is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of the stainless steel strip. This process removes the black oxide scale formed during hot rolling and heat treatment via pickling or similar methods. It is the primary surface treatment, resulting in a silvery white, matte finish. This surface is typically used in industries requiring heat and corrosion resistance without the need for high surface gloss, such as the alcohol and chemical industries, and large container manufacturing.
- 2B: In contrast to the 2D surface, the 2B surface is achieved by a light rolling process, resulting in a brighter finish. The equipment-measured surface roughness Ra value ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, which is a standard for most processing types. This versatile stainless steel strip surface is ideal for chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical industries, and applications like building curtain walls.
- TR hard surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. These are used for products requiring high strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel are harnessed to enhance the strength and hardness of steel plates through cold working techniques like rolling. To achieve this, the hard material is lightly rolled by a few to several tens of percent, bypassing annealing post-rolling. Consequently, the TR hard surface is the rolled surface obtained after the cold rolling process.
- Re-rolled bright 2H: Following the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled while traveling at speeds between 60-80m/min. This method results in a superior 2H re-rolled bright surface finish.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts an excellent polishing effect, presenting a higher brilliance compared to No. 3. Achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, it is further refined with a 150-180# grit sanding belt. The surface roughness (Ra) ranges between 0.2 and 1.5μm. This versatile finish is ideal for applications in restaurants, cooking equipment, medical apparatus, architectural decoration, containers, and more.
- HL: The HL surface, often referred to as a hairline finish, is defined by the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous hairline abrasive surface achieved with a 150-240# grit abrasive belt. While the Chinese GB3280 standard is less specific, the HL finish remains popular for architectural elements such as elevators, escalators, and exterior facades.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is further enhanced from the No. 4 finish using a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive, per the GB2477 standard. This finish offers a refined metallic luster, soft sheen, minimal reflection, and no imaging. Its excellent characteristics make it suitable for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and culinary tools.
- BA: The BA surface undergoes bright heat treatment post-cold rolling, ensuring a non-oxidized finish and maintaining the cold-rolled gloss. Following annealing in a protective atmosphere, the surface is polished with a high-precision roller, achieving a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, akin to a mirror. This polished finish is perfect for food utensils, household appliances, medical devices, automotive parts, and decorative elements.
- No. 8: Known for its mirror-like surface with maximum reflectivity and no abrasive particles, the No. 8 finish is often termed 8K board in the stainless steel deep processing industry. Utilizing BA material, it requires minimal polishing to achieve a stunning mirror effect, making it ideal for building entrances and interior décor.
