431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts superior corrosion resistance across a broad array of corrosive environments. While it offers some resistance to saltwater in colder southern waters, its performance may not excel in warmer tropical waters. In general, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material stands comparable to or slightly below that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved when the material maintains a smooth surface in its hardened and tempered state.
Withstands scaling at intermittent service temperatures up to 925°C and continuous service up to 870°C. However, usage above the specified tempering temperatures is usually discouraged due to a decline in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. For process annealing, heat to 620-660°C and then let it air cool.
To harden, heat the material to 980-1065°C, hold for approximately 30 minutes, then quench in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C is beneficial for intricate parts or those already hardened. Tempering should be done to meet mechanical requirements, adhering to the temperatures in the accompanying table.
Avoid the 425-600°C tempering range due to diminished impact toughness, though the effect is less pronounced than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding is challenging due to cracking risks. Pre-heat the material to 200-300°C before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 provide more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not essential. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
This grade is relatively easy to machine in its annealed state. However, machining becomes increasingly difficult if hardened beyond 30HRC. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and tool life.
Common uses include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar, but not necessarily identical, properties are specified for other products like plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
