GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a remarkable two-phase, ferritic-austenitic stainless steel enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Notably, it stands as the most frequently utilized duplex stainless steel grade, boasting a yield strength that is twice that of standard austenitic grades. Its superior fatigue strength is complemented by unparalleled resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the most demanding environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The alloy's composition ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Remarkably resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and effective at temperatures up to 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite in Duplex 2205 enhances performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, exposure to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) causes embrittlement, even for short durations. It is, therefore, not recommended for use beyond this temperature threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 showcases excellent weldability.
- Generally, it should not be welded without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The ideal annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 is between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment but can work-harden.
- Special attention is necessary to accommodate the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to avoid warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, edges may cool faster than the bulk, risking cracking in these cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 has demonstrated impressive formability across a range of fabrications. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even if the equipment possesses adequate power, consideration must be given to the greater spring-back caused by the grade's high strength.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging than the 300 series austenitic stainless steels due to the need for higher cutting forces, which accelerates tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Utilizing robust, rigid machines with exceptionally firm mounting of tools and workpieces, B) Reducing vibration by keeping tool extensions to a minimum, C) Employing a nose radius on the tool that is as small as needed for carbides with a sharp edge while maintaining adequate strength, and D) Designing machining sequences to ensure the depth of cut remains beneath the work-hardened layer from previous passes.
Defining Characteristics of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, enhancing its performance and corrosion resistance when compared to 304 and 316 stainless steels. The alloy's balanced austenite/ferrite microstructure, along with its alloying elements, provides resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 maintains acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C, but is limited to specific applications due to brittleness from prolonged exposure to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C. Type 2205 stainless steel strip, coil, and sheet are versatile for numerous applications.
Frequently Utilized Stainless Steel Coil Surfaces
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil can vary based on the cold rolling processes and subsequent surface treatments applied. Common surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and others:
- NO.1: This surface is achieved post hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of the stainless steel strip to remove black oxide scale. It ranks highest in surface treatment for heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries requiring minimal surface gloss, such as the alcohol, chemical industries, and large containers. The No. 1 surface is silvery white and matte.
- 2B: The 2B surface, unlike the 2D surface, is smoothened with a light roller for a brighter appearance. The surface roughness Ra value ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, making it suitable for a variety of applications. This adaptable stainless steel strip surface is ideal for industries such as chemical processing, papermaking, petroleum, medical sectors, and architectural curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, often termed hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301, suitable for high-strength applications such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. By utilizing the work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel, the strength and hardness of steel plates are enhanced through cold working methods like rolling. To replace the smooth flatness of the 2B base surface, the hard material undergoes a minimal to significant percentage of gentle rolling without subsequent annealing, resulting in the TR hard surface.
- Re-rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. By utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip can be rapidly cooled as it travels at speeds between 60-80m/min. This meticulous process results in a 2H re-rolled bright surface finish, enhancing both the aesthetic and functional qualities of the stainless steel.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts an impressive polishing effect, surpassing the brightness of No. 3. Achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by sanding with a 150-180# grit belt, this finish maintains a surface roughness (Ra) between 0.2 and 1.5μm. Renowned for its versatility, the No. 4 surface is extensively utilized in culinary and medical equipment, architectural decoration, containers, and more.
- HL: The HL surface, or hairline finish, is characterized by a continuous abrasive texture polished with a 150-240# grit belt according to the Japanese JIS standard. Although the Chinese GB3280 standard is less defined, this finish is principally used for architectural decorations such as elevators, escalators, and building facades.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an enhanced version of No. 4, incorporating a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive as per the GB2477 standard. This finish offers a striking metallic luster with soft, minimal reflection and no imaging, making it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and culinary supplies.
- BA: The BA surface is achieved through bright heat treatment post cold rolling. This meticulous annealing process in a protective atmosphere prevents oxidation, preserving the cold-rolled gloss. A high-precision smooth roller further polishes the surface, achieving a near-mirror finish with a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm. BA surfaces are ideal for applications in food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative items.
- No. 8: The No. 8 surface, also known as a mirror finish, offers maximum reflectivity with no abrasive particles. Often referred to as 8K board in the stainless steel deep processing industry, this finish leverages BA material as a base for mirror processing. With minimal polishing, it results in a stunning, reflective surface perfect for building entrances and interior decoration.
