CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 boasts outstanding resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking, positioning it as a superior choice for challenging environments.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C) for Alloy 2205. Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this threshold can lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 offers more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. Additionally, it can be supplied in a cold-worked state, with yield strength exceeding 160 ksi. It maintains impressive toughness even at temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be efficiently cold-formed, albeit with a high work-hardening rate, necessitating intermediate anneals. Post hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are unmatched, featuring advanced extrusion and cold working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We proudly house one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings, reinforcing our position as a leader in the industry.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe stands out as a superior duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel. With a composition of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel, it is the most frequently used grade in its class. It boasts a yield strength that is double that of traditional austenitic grades and exceptional fatigue strength. It also offers unparalleled resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). Care must be taken to ensure the workpiece is uniformly heated to avoid the risk of cracking in cooler areas.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases remarkable formability across various manufacturing processes. Nevertheless, its superior strength can pose challenges. Even with powerful equipment, the considerable springback attributed to this grade's high strength must be meticulously addressed for optimal outcomes.
Machining Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The elevated cutting forces required accelerate tool wear. To mitigate this, consider these machining guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions short to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is not excessively long, maintaining a sharp edge while ensuring adequate strength; D) Strategize the machining sequence to keep the depth of cut always beneath the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
