Type 321 stainless steel is a high-performance austenitic steel. Sharing the robust qualities of Type 304, it boasts enhanced titanium and carbon content, offering superior resistance to corrosion and oxidation, along with exceptional toughness at cryogenic temperatures. With its impressive resistance to oxidation and corrosion, 321 stainless steel is fortified with titanium, leading to a range of desirable properties: It prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the weld, provides partial protection against intergranular corrosion, and reduces embrittlement in high-risk weld areas. Specifically, 321H stainless steel excels in environments where parts are heated to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and face corrosive atmospheres. Unlike 304 stainless steel, 321 contains more nickel and is stabilized with titanium, which interacts with carbon to prevent chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries. This preserves corrosion resistance by minimizing chromium consumption during exposure to critical temperatures. This grade hardens effectively with cold working, is easily weldable, and seldom requires post-weld annealing, ensuring outstanding performance across various corrosive conditions.

GENERAL PROPERTIES

• The 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance. It offers robust protection against intergranular corrosion when exposed to chromium carbide precipitation temperatures (800 - 1500°F / 427 - 816°C). This alloy resists oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and surpasses 304 and 304L in terms of creep and stress rupture properties, while maintaining impressive low-temperature toughness.
• Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109) features a higher carbon content (0.04 - 0.10), specifically engineered for superior creep resistance and strength at elevated temperatures above 1000°F (537°C). The carbon content often permits dual certification, enhancing its versatility.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

• Demonstrates excellent general corrosion resistance comparable to 304.
• Specifically developed for use within the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
• Suitable for use in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
• Effective in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
• Performs well in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
• Resistant to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
• Utilizable in *** or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
• Not recommended in chloride solutions, even in small concentrations, or for sulfuric acid service.

PROCESSING

Alloy 321/H is easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.

HOT FORMING

• Recommended working temperatures for forging and other hot processes range between 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C).
• Not suitable for hot working below 1700°F (927°C).
• Material must be water quenched or fully annealed post-working to restore maximum corrosion resistance.

COLD FORMING

• Highly ductile and forms with ease.

WELDING

• Easily welded by most standard processes.
• Post-weld heat treatment is not necessary.

MACHINING

• The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel, but similar to 304.
