Ti 6Al-4V (Grade 5 Titanium) is the most extensively utilized titanium alloy, representing over 50% of titanium consumption. Typically used in the annealed state, it operates up to 400°C (750°F) and can be welded with matching or ELI filler wire. Compared to commercially pure titanium tubes, Ti 6Al-4V offers significantly higher strength, better stiffness, and superior thermal properties (excluding thermal conductivity). The thermal conductivity of Grade 5 titanium tube is about 60% lower than CP titanium. It can be heat-treated for enhanced strength and performance, boasting strong formability, low density, and excellent corrosion resistance.

This grade offers an ideal blend of strength, corrosion resistance, weldability, and machinability, making it highly suitable for military aircraft, aviation industry, rocket parts, precision-guided components, armor parts, ship equipment, military vacuum equipment, and more. DaXun manufactures premium titanium pipes with diameters ranging from 12.7 mm to 38.1 mm (0.47 in to 1.5 in), wall thicknesses from 0.4 mm to 1.65 mm (0.016 in to 0.065 in), and lengths up to 25000 mm. Our Gr1, Gr2, and Gr12 titanium alloy pipes are ideal for engineering and chemical industries. Utilizing flat rolled raw material (kelp), our welded pipes are crafted through automatic tungsten inert gas (argon) welding on electric pipe welders and heat treated on the mill line. INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands as the premier choice among titanium alloys. This exceptional duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy integrates aluminium as an alpha stabiliser and vanadium as a beta stabiliser. Renowned for its high strength, this alloy excels at cryogenic temperatures, reaching up to 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is versatile, finding applications in annealing, solution treatment, and aging. It is the material of choice for compressor blades, discs, and rings in jet engines; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure containers; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and critical forgings requiring a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio.
  • This alloy undergoes initial melting through vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequent remelting is carried out in one or two vacuum arc steps.

HEAT TREATMENT

  • Annealing at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) is performed to achieve high hardness, tensile, and fatigue strength.
  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers multiple heat treatment methods.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), for ½ to 2 hours, then air or furnace cool.
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), for 1 to 8 hours, then air or furnace cool.
  • 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), for 1 hour, followed by water quench.
  • 4. Aging Treatment: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), for 4 to 8 hours, then air cool.
  • In the solution treated and aged condition, optimal properties are achieved with small cross-sections that are rapidly quenched.
    Larger section sizes and/or quench delays may result in sub-optimal properties.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness ranges are Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition and Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.

FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at a starting temperature of 1,750°F (954°C), with an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For best results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
  • The exceptional DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy, renowned for its high strength, poses challenges when forming at room temperature, even in its annealed state. However, demanding forming processes like bending or stretching are feasible on annealed material at elevated temperatures of up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming can be effectively conducted using creep forming within the temperature range of 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

MACHINABILITY

  • The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy exhibits machinability akin to austenitic stainless steels, necessitating slow speeds, heavy feeds, and rigid machining practices.
    For optimal results, use robust tooling and ample amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluid to maintain performance and tool longevity.

WELDABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube offers excellent weldability in both annealed and solution-treated, partially aged conditions, with subsequent ageing during post-weld heat treatment.
  • To prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, meticulous precautions are essential. Fusion welding can be conducted within an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield protecting the molten metal and adjacent hot zone. Various welding techniques such as spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be performed without requiring a protective environment.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling, and absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treatment, and brazing. Such contamination can diminish ductility, impacting notch sensitivity and forming capabilities.

Heat Treatment

When high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength are required, the material is annealed at temperatures ranging from 1,700 to 1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) to achieve optimal mechanical properties.
The DAXUN 6-4 Grade 5 Titanium Tube offers exceptional versatility with multiple heat treatment options.
1. Annealing: Achieve optimal softness and ductility by annealing at 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
2. Stress Relief Annealing: Relieve internal stresses by applying annealing at 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, then air or furnace cool.
3. Solution Heat Treating: Enhance strength and hardness by solution heat treating at 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour, followed by a water quench.
4. Aging: Achieve desired mechanical properties by aging at 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, then air cooling.

Optimized Properties

Rapid quenching of small cross-sections in the solution treated and aged condition ensures optimal properties. Note that larger cross-sections or delayed quenching may result in suboptimal properties.

Hardness

Typical hardness levels are Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition and approximately Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.

Forgeability and Formability

The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube, exhibits excellent forgeability when forged at 1,750°F (954°C), with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum reduction of 35% is recommended for optimal results.

Room temperature forming of the DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube, is challenging, even in the annealed state. Severe forming operations, such as bending or stretching, can be effectively performed on annealed material at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without altering mechanical properties. Creep forming is recommended for hot sizing or forming at temperatures between 1,000 and 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

Machinability

The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube, can be machined using techniques suited for austenitic stainless steels. Employ slow speeds, high feeds, robust tool rigidity, and ample non-chlorinated cutting fluids to achieve precision.

Weldability

The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5 Titanium Tube, demonstrates excellent weldability in both annealed and solution-treated conditions. Aging can be performed during post-weld heat treatment.

To avoid contamination with oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, fusion welding should be carried out in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield over the molten metal and nearby hot zones. Spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding are possible without a protective atmosphere.

Special Considerations

Care must be taken to prevent hydrogen contamination during pickling, as well as the absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can diminish ductility and negatively impact notch sensitivity and formability.
