A global leader in stainless steel sheet fabrication services

The 420 stainless steel sheet contains more carbon than its 410 counterpart. This grade of steel is known for being both ductile and corrosion-resistant, with a smooth, polished surface that becomes remarkably hard, enhancing its corrosion resistance. It excels in forming and welding applications, capable of being deep drawn without cracking. This makes it an ideal material for manufacturing sinks, hollow utensils, and pans. With robust tensile strength, these bars demand less maintenance, making them easier to work with. They are not only durable and flexible but also resistant to pitting.

Stainless Steel Plate Surface Description

Finish Designation Method and degree of finish
No.1 After hot rolling, heat treatment, pickling or other equivalent treatment is applied.
No.2D Annealing and pickling are performed after cold rolling; material is soft with surface of silver-white luster; used for general applications and deep drawing.
No.2B After 2D finish, skin pass rolling is performed to obtain a more suitable luster; the surface becomes very exquisite; used for general applications.
No.3 Intermediate 100-120 grit finish; used for applications in which surface polishing is performed after shaping.
No.4 General 150-180 grit finish; used for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#240 240 grit finish; used when a finer finish than No. 4 is required; typically for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#320 320 grit finish polished product.
HL This finish is performed by continuous linear polishing using an abrasive of appropriate grain size; mainly used for architectural applications.
BA Achieved by performing bright annealing after cold rolling and then skin pass rolling to obtain even greater reflectance; provides excellent corrosion resistance; used for household appliances, kitchen equipment, and automobiles.
8K Through multiple grinding, it achieves very high brightness and smoothness, like a mirror.

420 Steel Plate En 10088-2 Wear Resistance 0.9mm-13mm Baosteel Mirror Surface for Chemical Equipment 420 Stainless Steel Sheet

General Properties
Alloy 420 Stainless Steel Plate is an exceptionally hardenable martensitic stainless steel, evolved from Alloy 410. Like Alloy 410, it boasts a minimum of 12% chromium content, ensuring robust corrosion resistance. However, the 420 variant contains higher carbon content, augmenting its strength and hardness. Post-annealing, it reveals impressive ductility, and can be toughened to a remarkable Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC-the pinnacle for 12% chromium grades. While its hardening properties make welding rare, it remains a possibility. Engineered for superior hardness, martensitic stainless steels may trade off some other attributes. The corrosion resistance of Alloy 420 is less than that of standard austenitic grades, with performance parameters constrained by reduced ductility at sub-zero temperatures and diminished strength due to over-tempering at elevated temperatures. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when the metal is hardened and the surface is meticulously ground or polished.
Specifications: UNS S42000.
Applications:
420 stainless steel is extensively employed in scenarios demanding superior corrosion resistance and hardness. Its utility above 800°F (427°C) is limited due to rapid hardening and compromised corrosion resistance. Typical applications for 420 alloy encompass:
Knives
Blades
Surgical instruments
Needle valves
Shear blades
Scissors
Hand tools
Corrosion resistance:
Not as resistant as austenitic grades and 17% chromium ferritic alloys
Exhibits good resistance to atmospheric conditions, foods, fresh water, and mild acids when hardened
Resistance diminishes when annealed
Surface finish is smooth
Heat resistance:
Not advisable for use above pertinent tempering temperatures due to reduced mechanical properties
Scaling temperature is around 1202°F (650°C)
Machinability
Tends to accumulate hard, elongated chips.
Machining characteristics akin to some high carbon tool steels
Welding
Generally avoided due to air hardening properties
Preheat to 300-400°F before welding
Temper for 2 hours post-welding
Hot Working
Gradual heating to 1400°F and then to 2000-2200°F is recommended
Cool slowly after furnace work to prevent cracking
Reheating is essential to keep the working temperature above 1600°F.
Cold Working
Can only endure light cold working.
Intense forming will lead to cracking.
Annealing
Anneal between 1550-1650°F (843-900°C)
Allow the furnace to cool gradually.
Tempering
Temper at 300-400°F
Air cool to maximize hardness and corrosion resistance.
Hardening
Soak at 1850-1950°F, then quench in hot oil.
