Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel renowned for its exceptional oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. If not otherwise specified by the purchaser, any composition within these may be provided as UNS S40900. This material is crafted with enhanced formability attributes known in the industry as "High Performance" or "Ultra Form."

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel. This general-purpose chromium stainless steel is predominantly employed in automotive exhaust systems. It excels in applications where mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and weldability are paramount, particularly under high-temperature conditions.
- ASTM specifications, including ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, now classify S40910, S40920, and S40930 as sub-grades, replacing the generic Grade 409.
- These variants are stabilized to different extents with titanium, niobium, or their combination. Any of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). ASTM A268M only acknowledges standard Grade 409 for tubes.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 boasts resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While a light surface rust forms in most environments to inhibit further corrosion, it's not ideal for cosmetic use. Its corrosion resistance parallels that of 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410) but is inferior to 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C, though specific service environments may influence these limits.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat to 790-900°C and cool with air. This grade cannot be toughened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Welding is straightforward, though pre-heating to 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or 430 electrodes or filler rods can be used, Grade 309 rods or electrodes are pre-qualified per AS 1554.6. These austenitic fillers yield a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
Welding small sections doesn't require post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded without filler metal (autogenously).
To mitigate grain formation effects, all welding should be performed with minimal heat.

- ASTM A268M details the parameters for annealed tubing of Grade 409. ASTM A240M specifies the composition of additional grades for coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other products may share similar yet distinct properties.
Forming:
- Type 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability is akin to carbon steel.
