CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Our TISCO 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod Cold Rolled for Aviation excels in resisting corrosive environments far superior to any standard hardenable stainless steel.
  • It's comparable to Alloy 304 in most media, ensuring versatility.
  • Perfect for applications within chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food process industries due to its high corrosion resistance.
  • However, it may be vulnerable to crevice or pitting corrosion if exposed to stagnant sea water for extended periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • Easily welded using most common fusion and resistance techniques.
  • Note: Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended for this material.
  • Generally, no pre-heating is required before welding.
  • Ensure the inter-pass temperature is kept below 248°F.
  • Achieve better toughness in the weld with a comprehensive heat treatment post-welding.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Outstanding resistance to oxidation up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Long-term exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in the precipitation-hardened state.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • To forge, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F, maintaining for half an hour per inch of thickness.
  • Optimal hot forming occurs in the 650-900°F range, while the steel remains austenitic.
  • Re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F to ensure the best hardening conditions.
  • Cool the forgings below 90°F to achieve grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • The 17-4 alloy is suitable for mild cold forming operations due to its hardness in the annealed state.
  • For more severe cold working, heat treatment to condition H1150 is advisable to prevent cracking.
  • Cold forming often requires a bend radius exceeding 7T.
  • To enhance stress corrosion resistance post-cold forming, re-age at the precipitation-hardening temperature.

MACHINABILITY:

  • This alloy can be machined effectively in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
