CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless Steel Rod

• Boasting superior resistance compared to 304 stainless steel, the 316L rod thrives in diverse atmospheric conditions and various corrosive media, thanks to its elevated chromium and molybdenum content.

• It exhibits vulnerability to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and may experience stress corrosion cracking at temperatures exceeding 122°F (50°C).
• This grade demonstrates formidable resistance to potable water containing up to approximately 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, which decreases to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Commonly referred to as "marine grade stainless steel," it is nonetheless not impervious to warm sea water.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance, performing effectively in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L offers enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Showcasing outstanding weldability through all conventional fusion techniques, with or without filler metals.
• For optimal corrosion resistance, heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing, a process not required for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range is between 1900 and 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• This material cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special care is essential to counteract the higher coefficient of thermal expansion and prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C) for optimal results.
• To achieve peak corrosion resistance, ensure the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• The 316/316L Stainless Steel Rod types, known for their exceptional toughness and ductility, can be readily cold worked into various shapes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, and more, with ease.
• Severely cold formed components should undergo annealing to alleviate stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Type 316/316L Stainless Steel Rod presents more machining challenges compared to Type 304 due to its toughness.
• 316/316L materials form chips that are robust and resilient.
• Utilize chip breakers and curlers for better results.
• Employ the largest tools possible with ample cutting fluid to ensure efficiency.
• Heavy, positive feeds at lower speeds are recommended, as 316/316L hardens swiftly during work.
